How to address a particular issue at a job interview.?

I found a great job opportunity in my field and I have the chance to interview for it. How do I explain to the interviewer as to why I want to leave my current employer?

The reason being is that as much as I love my current job, it will probably go nowhere soon and I've been there for almost two years. I've got nothing else to prove except for a new supervisor coming in at the beginning of September.

I was up for a full-time promotion several months ago but due to the current economy, that was not feasible and they hired another part-timer like myself.

How do I address this in the interview?

  1. You are looking for an opportunity that will provide better long term career growth and development.

    That should do it.

  2. Say that you are looking to work for a company that will allow you to excel and advance....and unfortunately, you've gone as far as you can go in your current job.  You can tell the truth without spilling all the details...good luck!

  3. You can be honest about the circumstances.  State that you feel you've accomplished a lot in your current role & want to grow & expand your skills, and that there are limited positions of greater responsibility currently available in your organization.

This display of ambition and willingness to take on bigger responsibility will be respected by any good interviewer.

  4. Exactly the way you've done it here.

  5. You have nearly answered this question yourself.  The interviewer will ask you why you want to leave your present job and you tell him:

    1.  there are no chances for advancement at your present company due to the economy

    2.  you want to move on to a new challenge and this new job will provide that challenge.

    3.  If you research the company you are interviewing for, you might find out some little "nugget" of info to use to let them know you have done your homework.  "I want to be with your company because I know they are..... " (what are they doing that is appealing to you?)

    4.  two years at a company is very credible. you gave it your all there and now is the time to move on to a new, challenging, experience.

  6. Just explain to the interviewer that you are looking for a position that will allow for advancement, and that your current employer cannot offer that to you.

  7. Pretty much what you've said here.

While you like where you're at, you don't see any room for growth or advancement, and are now seeking out other oppertunities as a result.
