Question:

How to address a touchy situation in a job interview.

I held a second job for 2-3 months and I left because my boss was rude to me. When I was doing my work, he would just dump a pile of papers at my desk, point to them and say "here, you call these people" without a please or a thank-you.

How do I address this in an interview? I am not going to bad-mouth him or anything like that.

  1. Well, you can't tell the story like you just did, because your interviewer will get the idea you don't know how to handle being told what to do. So you'll have to gloss it over.

  2. Avoid discussing your old boss in a job interview.  Period.  If you are asked as to why you left, say you were ready to move on or make more money.  Discussing an old boss is always risky in a job interview.

  3. Don't give any details about what happened. If you speak badly about a previous employer it makes you sound petty and may cause the interviewer to think you are a drama queen/trauma king who cant get along with others. I would recommend just saying you quit because you are looking for something with a more professional environment.  But, since it was "second job" you are probably better off just not mentioning it, unless you need to show experience in that job field.
