  1. There are at least three issues at work here.

    1.  Contrast Ratio - The difference between the whitest white and the darkest black colors that the display can show.  This is not user adjustable and is usually provided with the specifications of the TV.  The higher the contrast, the better.

    2.  Contrast Level - Within the limitations of the preset contrast ratio, you can make some corrections based upon ambient light conditions by using your remote control to adjust the contrast level, which is really just adjusting the backlighting of your LCD to lighter or darker levels, as the lighting level in your room dictates.

    3.  Viewing Angle - Liquid Crystal Displays have a limited viewing angle by nature.  That is one of the factors that people use to determine whether to buy a plasma or LCD, along with how black an LCD can really display black. LCDs lose contrast at some viewing angles and the 700:1 factory contrast ratio was likely derived with the LCD at eye level.

The bottom line is that since the contrast ratio and viewing angle are fixed, the only option that you have other than moving our TV higher or lower is to manually adjust the contrast level to compensate.

  2. Contrast ratio (as you may know) is the greater the difference between shades of colour. (Hight number makes the darks darker, and the lights lighter.)

No, you can not increase them, it's set like that.

If you want higher, but a better TV.

I would recommend a Sony Bravia!

  3. i agree with john except for instead of buying a sony bravia buy the sony xbr4, it's way better for many reasons.
