Hi, I am sixteen years old (1992) and would like to become a British citizen. My father is a citizen although he hasn't lived there for many years. He and my mother never got married. I would love to go to college in England though and so I am wondering if anyone knows how and where I can apply for British citizenship.

Can you please describe the process too?

thanks : )

  1. A lot of people here have been saying that since your father is British, then you are already a British citizen - and that would be true IF your parents had been married to each other.  Whether it's fair, or not, the rules are not the same when the parents aren't married to each other, and generally a father has not been able to automatically pass his citizenship to children born outside of marriage, although there are some ways where you might be able to request British citizenship.

The best way to find out if you have any claim to British citizenship is to write the nearest British Consulate, and ask if there is any way for you to acquire British citizenship.

    You should tell them:

The citizenship, date, and place of birth, for

you, your mother, and your father.

Explain to them that your parents got married, but that your father is British and you'd like to know if there is any way for you to claim British citizenship.

This may have to be applied for before you are 18, so do it sooner rather than later.  British citizenship would be valuable because it would give you the right to live and work in any country in the European Union, not just in the UK.

Note that if you do have a claim to British citizenship, you can acquire it without losing your US citizenship.  Check the following website for more information on the US policy regarding dual citizenship

  2. Easy. I went down this road (as a US citizen with a UK mother). The sites can be all confusing.

If he is on your birth certificate it matters not if your birth was registered with the UK embassy. It matters not if your parents were not married at the time. The process is if your father was a citizen when you were born you get a passport.... just apply. No big deal. You will have to show up in person at a consulate or embassy at some point. New rules.

Go to the UK embassy site in DC and download the forms. Send them in. I did so and recieved a passport in 4 weeks.

  3. Heyy.

You answered my question about eating fruits and veggies for a week.

I was wondering if you'd email what you ate exactly during the cycle to lose 7lbs?
