  1. I agree with both the answers I have read, but would just add that if you have problems then contact your local citizen's advice bureau - CAB (they are in the 'phone book). They can put you in touch with qualified lawyers and accountants and IFAs who will work pro bono ( Latin for 'for the benefit', but in this context is an abbreviation of the Latin for 'for the public good' - i.e. free but don't take the p***).

  2. In short tax credits top up your earnings should you be on a low income, if go on the website noted below, it gives you some idea of what you might get and how to claim, and you don't need to provide proof of earnings when applying to claim for  tax credits, so the fact your partner is self employed should not make a difference to the claim, you just need to state what his earnings were for the past year.

  3. ring your local jobcenter they will give you all the numbers you need

  4. Hi you can apply on line at http://www.taxcredits.inlandrevenue.gov....

Or call HMRC for a form on 0845 300 3900

. This site will also allow you to work out how much you will get, They will ask to see your husbands accounts for the last tax year and base the award on your joint income from the previous tax year. You can get Tax Credits back dated 3 months so ask for it to be backdated to the baby's birthday

As long as your combined income is less than 56,000 pa you will qualify for some amount of TC
