  1. simply take a form and apply

  2. Look for employment notices of Raily Recruitment Board.

  3. All the class 1 railroads have websites where you can fill out an application. They are looking for people willing to work all shifts at any hour of the day or night. You can't have a felony on your record or they won't even consider you.You have to pass a physical including a back x ray.You also have to pass a physical skills test now which involves lifting and doing sit ups and other things like that.If you get called for an interview and go there they will be asking you questions to see if they think your railroad material. If you ask how long before i get weekends off or something else dumb like that they will show you the door

  4. Railway Recruitment Board advertises vacancies for different catagories in news papers .(Employment News).      time to time  Keep watch and apply.

  5. At the time I applied with BNSF, they did their hiring at the major cities where they had terminals, and did it through that city's particular job bank, or city employment agency. I don't know if this is true any more, in addition to on-line applications. Anyway, how ever you get an application, you'll need an edge to make your application get attention. First thing I did, was to locate other railroad employees and ask to use them as references. On the application, I gave the impression I had friends in railroading, and therefore knew something about what was required as a trainman and all that goes with it. Secondly, they look for people who are mechanically inclined. Not that as a trainman you'll be repairing anything, but it is this abstract thought process that is necessary for the job. For example: A train pulls in to a siding track to disconnect the engine in order to use the main track to put the engine on the rear of the train, so it can go the opposite direction. The problem is, the train has 40 cars and the siding only holds 36 cars. It is abstract thinking that enables people to figure out this type of problem and others. So I went heavy on mechanical ability and even submitted an extra sheet of paper with mechanical problems I had solved in the past. I'm sure it was these extra efforts that got me noticed in the ocean of applications. Oh, and tell 'em you'd like to become an Engineer. Most railroads like to hear that. Usually, they want all their trainmen to become Engineers sooner than later.

  6. Depending on the type of job you are applying for makes the difference on the type of physical agility testing they perfrom on you.

But to start you will need to visit their websites and go through their application process.

I know for a fact that Union Pacific does all of their hiring through the online application process.

When I appled I first sent them a resume in the mail.  I got a very nice letter in return that told me about their application procedures, and it directed me to their website.

The more physically demanding the job is that you are looking at, the tougher their physical exams will be.  As for Train Service, its a pretty easy exam.  There is a very basic physical agility test that you must pass in order to move on.

Even as overweight as I am, I passed the test within their guidelines.

Andy F is absolutely correct about your background history.  If you have any felonies of any kind you will be disqualified, same with certain misdomeaners.

Just make sure that you have all of their requested materials too.  All of this is part of your interview.  Basic listen and follow instructions.

    Good Luck!
