  1. Here's a better arrangement for 8-Ball:

    .......O

    ......X O

    ....O 8 X

    ...X O X O

    .O X O X X

It satisfies Rule 4.3 in that the two back corner balls are different, which, in addition to the position of the 8-Ball, are the only two criteria that matter.   Forget the "solid, stripe, solid, stripe" around the perimeter rule you learned in the bar because that results in the two back corner balls being the same.    The above arrangement also puts three balls of each group in symmetric contact with the 8-Ball.    And it's easy to remember if you take note of the diagonal rows starting at the bottom left.   I always put the 1-Ball at the apex because it's easy for the breaker to sight and it avoids the potential for an argument in the event that someone insists that it's a rule to put it there.    So, with the 1- and 8-Balls already assigned their position, and following the first four diagonal rows starting at the bottom left, arrange the balls "solid, stripes, solids, stripes (except for the 8)" for the first four rows, and "solid, stripe, solid, stripe" down the remaining four positions on the fifth row on the right side.   Presto!...a legal rack that is as close as you can get to evening the playing field for both sides.

  2. I just wanted to reiterate that KALL and shark have no idea what they're talking about. In the game of 8 Ball, the 8 must be in the center of the rack, and a ball of each group (stripes and solids) must be at each of the two back corners. All other balls must be in random order. Except for the 8, the numbers on the balls mean nothing.

In the game of 9 Ball, the 9 must be in the center, and the 1 must be in front. All other balls are distributed randomly.

In the game of billiards, aka carom pool, there are only 3 balls on the table and they are not numbered, so if you know how to play then the way they are arranged is  pretty self explanatory.

  3. The number has nothing to do with the arrangement. the arrangement must be:

            0

           11

          020

         1011

         01010

    0 is strips balls

    1 is spots balls

    2 is Black ball

it is oki if you replay 0 with 1 but all balls in 0 must go in the place of 1 and 1 in the place of 0
