How to ask for a raise in my allowance?

Ok, so I'm in 6th grade and I get about a $6 weekly allowance... I have been making my bed daily, and setting the table every night for dinner. I occasionally clean the bathroom & shower, vacuum, mow our yard and wash the car. Do you think $6 is sufficient enough? Or do you think I should get some more?

  1. alright... as a parent this is how I would look at it.... things like making your bed, cleaning up after yourself and keeping your room clean doesn't count for allowence. that's stuff you have to do because it's messes you made.

things like setting the table, giving the carpet an occasional sweep, and other things you don't do all the time would go for $6.

if you want to get more in your allowance then ask your parents what it is they want you do ALL the time to get more money. not just sometimes. like cleaning the bathroom one a week, doing the dishes EVERY night, cutting the lawn EVERY week, etc.

and remember... if you're parents say "no" don't take it personally... they do already pay for your food, water, housing, clothes, shoes, electricity, and a lot lot more.

  2. I totally think you should get more, I am 12 and don't do those things. My little brother is 7 and gets more than you. Our mom and dad only make us clean up our messes, not theirs. They only ask us to sometimes because they know it's not ours. Plus you get to do more so you should get about 12-15 dollars for doing so. I mean mowing the lawn, washing the car, making your bed, setting the table you should so get more. Like if not 12-15 then 10-20 or 30! Just talk to your parents, explain to them everything you do rather than the average kid doing nothing at all or just making their bed, cleaning their room, etc.

  3. well at least you should get paid $10

  4. It kinda depends on what your parents expect you to pay for out of your allowance.  As a parent who gives an allowance, I don't see it as payment for doing chores (you get free room and board already, and somebody does your laundry, I bet), but more of a tool to help a child understand the value of money and learn how to prioritize. My kid is too young to be significantly helpful with chores, but she gets an allowance anyway.

If I were you, I would sit down with your parents and talk about what the allowance is for, and what types of purchases they think you should be able to make with what they give you.  Once you've talked about what you should be able to afford with your allowance, go out and find real prices and see if you can really afford what your parents think you can. If you find that your parents are underestimating the prices of the sorts of things they think you should be able to buy, then you may have a good chance at getting your allowance raised.  At least that's the sort of thing that would impress me.

You could, also, ask your parents outright how they could be persuaded to increase your allowance.

  5. you're lucky you get allowance!! i don't and i'm older than you. but just ask your parents. tell them you want at least ten dollars. or take up babysitting.

  6. i think you should get more. maybe 10.00 a week. start working extra hard so your parents notice it. then tell them you've really been trying to do a better job lately and ask them if you could have a little more money every week.
