Question:

How to ask for a salary raise (my employers are my relatives)

i have been working as an administrator/caretaker of 2 condominium buildings owned by relatives for almost 3 years now. i didn't thought of asking for a raise until just recently when i am finding it really hard to make both ends meet. please help me make a request letter that would not sound awkward. thank you!

  1. tell them your having hard times because of the economy and gas prices everyone can identify w/ that

The most compelling reason for your employer giving you a raise would be a list of your successes and accomplishments.  The fact that you can't make ends meet on your current rate of pay is not compelling to an employer (regardless of any family connection).  You should make a list of of your accomplishments (kept the buildings occupied at a low vacancy rate, managed the repairs effectively, blah blah) and make your case based on your achievements.  In other words, tell them WHY you are WORTH more money, and shoot high on what you're asking for, so they have room to negotiate you down a little bit.  That makes both sides feel like they won, which is an effective strategy.
