Question:

How to attach a Swinging rope in a barn?

I would like to set up a swinging rope in a barn using the rafters as what to hang it from. Ideally I'd like to use rock climbing rope as it's readily available. What would be the best kind of rope for this and what kind of knots should I use to secure it to the rafter? Is there any way to do it using hardware instead of knots? This is going to be reused, but taken down between uses. (And the rafters are about 20 feet from the floor.)

Thank you.

  1. Make a slip knot on the very end.  wrap the rope around the beam a couple of times and pass the other end through the eye of the slip knot.  tug and tighten into place.

  2. To avoid knots you could have a loop created at one end by having a sleeve mechanically crimped on - go to a local cable or sling supplier, (not cable as in cable TV). Then, using a ladder, attach a heavy duty pully with a rope (not the swing rope) that has a hook with safety latch (also available from the sling company). Then, when you want to use the swing you will lower the rope with the hook, attach the swing rope using the loop, raise it up and swing away. When you are done, lower the hook, remove the swing rope raise the hook up out of the way and you're good to go.

  3. buy a chain wrap around the beam a couple of times use a (D shackle) attached to a pulley if you have somwhere to tie the rope off on the wall or somthing then when not in use just pull up the tyre until next time.safer than climbing up and down all the time, heres another idea use a second chain and pulley placed nearest the wall so rope is out of the way,put a couple of notches in the rafter to stop the chain from moving when in use hope this gives you some ideas
