How to attract dragonflies?

My fiance and I are going to add some more flowers and plants to our backyard around the outside of our screen enclosure. Our house backs up to a canal, and there are LOTS of them flying over the water all the time, but I love them and want more to fly closer to the back porch where I can see them. What plants/flowers attract them?

  1. dragonflies like water so have a pond in your garden

  2. Standing water with some plants growing out of it is what you need. The dragon flies lay their eggs on the plants under the water. Their grubs (nymphs) are voracious feeders on water-born insects including mosquito larvae. In the spring they hatch out into adult dragonflies, which eat very little compared with the nymphs, but love to hang around the still water.

  3. Put in a small pond - even a half whiskey barrel with a pond liner in it.  Put a couple water plants in.  You don't even need a pump.

Have a pond, even a small one, and the dragonflies will come.  Guaranteed.

  4. They eat mosquitoes and the larvae. So have water element in your garden will bring them. I put in a pond with goldfish and I have dragon flies and butterflies all over the place! I love it! Have fun
