  1. I would wash them before eating them. But in telling how ripe they are ,, it depends on what it is.  Bananas are greener on the outside when they aren't ripe enough. And watermelon is not ripe enough if you thump it and it sounds hollow,  peaches are firm but not squishy etc. Food poisoning comes mostly from not cooking your meat enough or leaving it out after it is cooked, too long.

  2. You check the color and see if its TOO soft. With bigger fruits (watermelons, cantaloupes, etc) you check for how hollow it is.

  3. Well i would have to say that most the time you can tell. If not...its usually found in raw seafood, under-cooked meat, and Milk! (yes...usually milk a week after expiration date) Oh! And these are found in obvious locations like restaurants that show that they don't show:

    clean environment

and not to mention crotch ed little food areas (crocheted  meaning small and uncomfterble)

    I hope this helped!

  4. how ripe they are has nothing to do with food poisoning.

wash everything, even melons, the out side is full of germs and when you cut into it with a knife  it will contaminate it.

as for it being ripe, firm but not hard, the color will tell you alot also.
