Question:

How to back out of a verbal rental agreement?

Like many others here on YA, I believe that my potential landlord is a scam artist. I recently cancelled a check after he insisted on payment in cash, but I think he might be hooked up with some bad people. How should I break the news that I won't be renting come March 1st after all? If he makes some "noise" that he's "going to do me in" should I call his bluff and say come and get me i.e take your best shot), or should I remain professional and say I've had second thoughts?

  1. Let him know asap.

  2. You could just be direct and tell him that you have decided to back out because of the cash only requirement.

And, consider offering him a small amount of inconvenience money to placate him, since he could lose a month's rent because of your actions.

Most people would prefer this action over a physical confrontation.

  3. You didn't sign anything, so you are under no obligation. Just call him and tell him you've changed your mind.

And if he threatens you, call the police. DON'T call his bluff.
