How to back up audio tapes?

Hi,

I have many audio tapes that i would like to back up on a computer.

Is there a way to hook up the Tape player to my computer and somehow Record the audio tape onto the hard-drive?

  1. You can connect the output (line-out) of the tape player to the line-in of your computer's sound card, using Windows Sound Recorder, the file will be saved as a wave file, which takes lots of megabytes. You can transfer this wave files to CD, but for this you need additional software.  One of them is "Sound Editor". Do a search for it.


  2. Paul F's answer begins to be correct, but don't use sound recorder.  This program only records 30 seconds max.  Get Audacity (a free sound recording software available from http://audacity.sourceforge.net).  You will be able to record the entire tape, and then edit it down to individual tracks, and save the tracks as MP3 files.
