How to balance the eqn Fe3+ + Zn-> Zn2+ + Fe2+?

  1. 2Fe3 + 2Zn -> Zn2 + 3Fe2


  2. 2Fe3+ &  1 Zn  -> 1 Zn2+ & 2 Fe2+

    because when:

    Zn -->  Zn+2 (loses two electrons in its oxidation,)

    we need two electrns to be taken, however:

    1 Fe+3 takes 1 electron --> Fe+2  (in its reduction)

    so we double the iron  to  have 2 e- taken matching the 2 e- lost:

    1 Zn -->  1 Zn+2 & 2e-

    2 Fe+3  & 2 e--->2 Fe+2

    & then combine the two1/2 reactions as:

    2Fe3+ &  1 Zn  -> 1 Zn2+ & 2 Fe2+
