Question:

How to balance work and coaching?

As a recent college graduate, I'm simultaneously looking for a job yet I really want to help out at a local school coaching volleyball, because, well, volleyball is my passion :P However, I feel like it's a hard, borderline impossible, task because practices are usually held right after school (around 3) but workdays end at 5. What I don't get is how my coaches, when I was in in high school, were able to do it. Please help! I really want to do both... is the only option to find a part-time job? I am primarily looking for a full-time job...

  1. You could do it if you got a job teaching at the school where you will be coaching.

  2. Some marketing people work on their 6-3 schedule when they deal with East coast clients. Part-time job, freelance, consulting, 3-shift manufacturing could also work out.

Some companies (such as Amgen) would encourage employees to participate in local community's activities, and would match their employees' volunteering time with monetary contributions. You might also want to check into those details when going in for an interview. Some supervisors would like to see employees taking care of their kids' sports activity as long as they don't delay any of their projects (most of them could have a "make-up" schedule).

There is a lot you have to deal with besides balancing your work and coaching. You might have to sacrifice your family life as well.
