I play for BYU right now for rugby sevens an I love sevens way more then 15's. I'm alright right now as a freshman but I want to be the best. I work really hard and am willing to do whatever it takes

  1. Get fit, and learn the game.  Watch all the 7's you can.  Check youtube and other such sites for 7's matches.  You will notice that 7's is all about taking advantage of a weakness in the other team.  You'll see guys back-peddle  many meters trying to create a gap and get their men in a position to do something.  You will not see many rolling mauls or scrums that drive down the field.  It is an open, flowing game, with spectacular bursts; similar to hockey.

Practicing tackling and either not leaving your feet or getting up very quickly.  It's not like 15's where you have a mass of forwards to secure the ball.  The ball is turned over much easier in the tackle.  It is also much more important that you make your tackles, as you won't have the backup like you do in 15's.  One missed tackle often means a try.

Because of that, you'll need to practice dishing the ball out of a tackle.  If you can drag two players in to tackle you, your team will have an overload.  In those cases, there is often a gap right on the fringe, which one of your teammates can exploit if you can get him the ball.

  2. It would probably start with you learning how to spell RUGBY properly ;-)

After that, it's simply a matter of asking inane questions about rugby on Y!A. That should teach you all you need to know.

It's a well known fact that all top level rugby players learnt their skills by asking daft questions in here, surely you knew that?

Minor points to consider would be your natural ability to play the game, your fitness, your strength, your ball skills etc. Don't worry about these, they are all easily achievable simply by asking more questions on Y!A.

  3. ok...first things first....get fit! fitness is the key in 7's, if you think you are fit now....you probably arnt....try and get some information about Gordon Tietjans - NZ 7's coach...his fitness trainings are killer! thats why NZ have won the world 7's series 7 times!! they are conditioned the best. you have to be the fittest player....crazy fit. work on your speed and power...go to a gym and surf the net to find speed drills and strength/power exercises. all the key ingredients you need for 7's are - fitness, strength, speed and power. to be the best you have to be fitter, faster, stronger then everyone else. another option is to go to NZ or australia or S.africa and turn up to some elite training and learn the ins and outs of the 7's game, alot of the best 7's players are the smartest players as well. maybe approach the USA eagles and and ask if you can join in with their trainings or watch and learn. it is hard work mate but definetly worth it!

  4. Sevens is all about fitness and broken play.  Work on your sidestep and your passing (BOTH ways!).  Learn to stand in the tackle and offload accurately and learn how to tackle when wrong-footed and you'll go a long way.
