  1. Always move quickly under the ball to position yourself. Stand firm when you toss the ball up and use your knees for power. Knowing your hitter's whereabouts and hitting habit and set ball accurately.

  2. Don't get too hung up on your hieght.  Velleyball is a sport where height can be an advantage, but it is not the only determinate.  I recently had a team where my two setters where 5'9" and 5'1" and I had equal confidence in both of them.  In most cases I prefer my setters to be short, quick and athletic.

As a setter you have to keep in mind that you have two main jobs

    1. Get to that second ball almost every time

    2. Put up a hittable ball for your hitters

It sounds like you do not have confidence in the mechanics of your sets.  Before you worry about timing with your hitters, setting 1's, 2's extra, make sure you have good mechanics.

    1. practice your footwork - sets should come off of the right foot after a hopping motion

    2. make sure you are receiving the ball correctly.  I used to take a deflated ball (that way it does not bounce) and set to myself.  I would come to a full stop each time the ball hit my hands to make sure I was getting all 10 fingers on it at the same time.

    3. Touches - get as many as you can.  Set to yourself.  Play Breakout on a wall (It is a video gaem from when I was a kid) you try to hit the same brick in a wall over and over.

    4. See if there are any Setter Specific Camps in your area.

After you improve your mechanics, get together with a hitter.  Have them give you feedback after each set.  If you are on a team, have all of your hitters give you one word feedback after each set e.g., higher, quicker, in, out etc.  develop your own system, but do not let the feedback get you down.  I tell my setters it is one of the hardest positions in sports (not just volleyball) and it takes a lot of mental toughness to be successful.

    Good luck

  3. First, you need a good pass (i.e. high enough, and not too close to the net or too far from you).  Secondly, you have to know who you are setting to before you get the pass, and know where they like to hit from.  You can't get a kill with a bad set, and everyone likes their set different.  Once you get control of your sets your hitters will do the rest of the work.

  4. I'm only about 5'4" and I've always been a setter. You have to be quick on your feet and be ready to take anything. You need to know where your boundaries are on the court so you can call for help early enough for someone to take it.(REMEMBER SETTER ALWAYS HAS SECOND HIT unless you call help) I have a setter ball that I use to practice with. It weighs more than a regular volleyball so when you actually do set a regular volleyball you'll set it higher. Usually setters are tall, but oh well. I'm deffinitely not tall, but they still have me in that position the whole game. If you feel like you're not setting it correctly make sure you're hands form a triangle above your forehead. You also might not be letting the ball rest in your hands a little bit before you let go of the set. That can cause it not to go as high as if you did it correctly. You should use your knees to help you with the heighth. The way you set it(how high it is and how far it extends out) also depends on which side of the court the hitter you're planning to set to is on. I hope I helped you a little bit. Good luck!

  5. Talk to your outside and inside hitters. Ask them how they want their sets (they know, believe me, I'm an outside.) and work with a coach on loft and knee use.

    Happy Setting!

  6. I am not a setter myself but I watch a lot of games and am a hitter:

    1. Most important is don't set over the net because lots of bad things will happen if you do.

    2. Don't double which means hit it one hand than another.

    3. Try to every pass perfect or close to it.

    4. Don't just throw it up because it might become a ugly pass. If you know that there a ulgy pass to you nd you won't make a good set than just hit it over over something.

    5. Ask your hitters where they want the ball to be set to them because everyone hit different.

I think that is all. I think that if you do this you will become a better setter. Also keep practicing because you will eventually get better.

  7. practice...u also need a good pass in order to set it correctly...u could also try a jump set...those work quite well for me and i am 5'2

  8. How about practice with another person on setting and you will get better.

  9. Boy, I like the answer from sweetness.  She's bang on... I'm only 5'4" myself and I played high school ball but only leisure ball in college.  You have to be faster, stronger and smarter than anyone else on the floor.  And the cornerstone of any good setter are good strong and soft hands.  You need to be inseparable with your volleyball.  Keep practicing and keep up with your conditioning.  The hardest working player has to be you.

  10. practice your form. You should have a diamond shape when you set. Also go against a wall. Ive just played against a great setter who is going to UC San Diago on a v- ball scholarship and his trick is to set low and quick.

  11. Get a ball at home and every night lay on your back in your bed.  Set yourself 10 times (increase as you get better).  Do not move except for your arms.  It will be hard at first, but you will get better.  The better you get each night, the better you will be in the gym.

  12. dont ask me.  i dont like to set. im afraid i will break my nails.  its pathetic, i know.
