Im currently going into my junior year of highschool and was wondering how to improve my game. My current position is a setter and Im pretty good, but I was wondering what sorts of drills or tips could make me better. Also, since I'm one of taller (6'3) kids on the team I was thinking about converting to a middle, so I was wondering what kinds of tips and drills there were to make me a good middle and hitter.

  1. I used to play for my school and my university. I also got trainer certificate from Perak. Let me answer with my limited knowledge which I left for quite some time.

I suggest you buy a ball or borrow a ball from your school. Every time you have free time, try to play around with the ball (set the ball). You can do it on your bed. Try to balance the ball so that it will come back to your fingers. Also try in different positions to set the ball. Be it during sitting, lying etc.

If you want to be in the middle, you must be good at fast balls (shot, shoot etc). You should improve your jumping. Try go for a jog with some loads on your legs. You can put a sack of sand on your both legs.

  2. If you have a sibling you could ask them to throw the ball down low to the ground so you can get a good feel about diving for the ball and you can go to a summer camp.

  3. keep practicing at diff. heights

  4. being a middle hitter sucks. you do the most work, you block outside, middle, and right side and you have to run in all the plays.  Going into junior year and converting to middle is a bad idea just because middle takes SOOOO much practice... but if you really want to... get your vert up by hitting the top of every door you walk through and walk on your tippy toes, also, lift weights =). not only does everyone like a buff bod (assuming you're a boy, since I haven't met many 6'3'' girls) but it makes your hit stronger.

  5. ok i relly dont want to type alot right now so just check out local pro vball camps around ur home town or email me later

  6. strozze has a good answer.  Get a volleyball.  And keep it with you whenever you can.  Even if it just staying in your hands.  Set the ball whenever you can.  Middles always think they have the best hands on the team and in your case, you might if you switch.

You should not think about switching to middle just because you are tall.  Middles can be shorter if they are quick.  A good setter is hard to find.  If you switch to middle and there is no replacement for you, your team will be good defensively and not so good offensively.

If you decide to switch to middle, practice your footwork.  Mark out a 30 foot line, so that you know how long the net will be.  Work on getting to about the 6 foot mark as fast as you can.  Jump.  You want to make sure your last step is a closure step so that you will jump straight up.  If not, you will end your season quickly when you land on the foot of your team mate.  Going up correctly is better than reaching and jumping at an angle.  You will be tooled if you do not do it correctly.  A bad block is worse than none at all.  At least with no block, there is a chance of your team digging the ball.  With a bad block, you will get a chance to practice your serve receive more.

  7. tips on middle hitters:

it's not all about spiking the ball if u are thinking of converting to a middle hitter. u have to be good at blocking the ball, too. and since ur height is 6'3", u can use that as an advantage. all u have to do is improve ur fitness (coz middle hitter is a taxing position), and build ur thigh muscle mass by doing lots of weight lifting (esp squats n leg press!). and u really, really have to be fast!

another advantage for u is u are first a setter. that means, u should know how the opponent's setter works. it helps to know how he/she sets (read their game) coz u can prepare urself to block their hitters, too!

i'm only speaking from experience coz i too played volleyball. and i have a friend who used to play for UMBC a few years back. now she's back home in Malaysia.

  8. Juggle!! It is fun and a good way to increase hand eye coordination. Juggling: bump - set - right arm - left arm - right knee - left knee - head - then back to bump -set - etc. we do this all the time in practice and even make it competitive and give the winner a prize.

Also, you could bump to the floor like sit down and get back up or you could even set it too.

    Hope this helps

  9. Well, i played all around and when i played middle i had to be fast. Now, im 5'8 and i got my elbows over the net. You have to have a good vertical when playin middle plus your height helps you out, but since you are taller you have to move faster.

  10. When I used to play, I was a middle too. When you're playing middle hitter, you need to make sure you can block. In order to block, you need to make sure you can jump high. Make sure you put your arms out, and spread your fingers as wide as you can, and make your hands real stiff so when that ball comes at your hands, you can block the ball and give it back to the other team. Try jump roping to make you jump higher. Hope that helps!

  11. I'm a little suprised your a setter at 6'3. Not that you can't be of course but usually taller people are blockers and hitter. I say convert. You already know the game so work on your jump for hitting and blocking. Lift some weights (if you're not already) to build more muscle for power.
