How to be a good safety in football?

ok so i am 4'10 95 pounds and i don't no how fast can run. do i have the requirements to be a safety? will i be any good? its the first playing on my skool team or any team for football . i am 12 joining football. how can i be good safety. my brother told me i was a good safety. how can i become better. i wouldnt say im overweight but im not skinny either. im also not the strong.

  1. Well in a basic defense, there's 2 types of safeties, and they both are very different.

    The strong safety (SS) usually plays like a 4th linebacker and is near the line of scrimmage.  He watches the running backs, and he jumps down to make tackles on them.  In passing plays, he might cover a tight end or #3 wide receiver.

    The free safety (FS) is the opposite of the SS.  A FS stays back 15-20 yds from the line of scrimmage and watches the quarterback to see where he is going to throw.  Then he runs in that direction to help out his cornerback or linebacker.

    So if you play SS, practice running forward and attacking the line of scrimmage to make tackles, and practice playing man-to-man coverage on the tight ends.  If you play FS, practice running from side to side and basically just pay attention to where the quarterback throws the ball.
