I am about to tutor other people for the first time in my life. ( I will teach Maths, Physics, Japanese).

I know my stuff, I have the knowledge, but HOW can I teach others well, and make them improve or learn?

Sould I be a strict tutor, or a friendly one?

What should I do to become a good tutor?

Thank you for anyone who is helping

  1. first of all, you must be able to teach. This means more than assigning homework and grading papers. The assigning part could be done by a semi-trained monkey and the later by a computer, faster and better than either of us.

Teaching means an effective means of communication between you and someone else. This is not so big of a deal on a one-to-basis, as you can watch for facial expressions and see if the information is being assimilated and acknowledged by the slight head nods, enlarging eyes, a smile, and maybe an increase in eagerness. As oppossed to head shaking, pencil chewing, loud sighs, paper crumpling, etc.

However, what you have to do has nothing to do with your GPA or subject knowledge. It has to do with finding some common grounds between you and the student. One you feel comfortable expressing, and one they feel comfortable learning. Once you find that balance, you'll both be effective. Personally, I find humor works for me. When possible, make a little light of the subject. Do not use this to become friendly however, because there will be times when you are going to have to be a little demanding and this is when it will backfire on you. Remember, the students are there to learn, but the parents are there to pay you. No results means no job. You are being paid, and paid well to teach little Johnny how to whatever. That is your foremost effort.

Good luck, enjoy yourself and remember all the annoying things teachers you've had did. Then don't do any of those.

You have to find the way to get across to the stuudent you're teaching. Remember that. Everything else is superfulous

  2. How to be a good tutor?  Tutor is a teacher.  Effective teachers affect lives.  Teachers who are efficient and effective are more capable of affecting the lives of students than teachers who are not efficient and effective.  Perhaps you have heard the definition of education, EDUCATION IS NOT teaching people things they don't currently know.  EDUCATION IS teaching people behaviors they don't currently practice.  For instance, what is the difference between a student who is tardy and a student who is not tardy?  Between one who turns in the homework and one who does not?  Between one who studies for the test and one who does not?  It is not height, age, s*x, race, religious affiliation or socioeconomic background.  It is behavior or attitude.  You change or affect the attitude of a student, and you suddenly have  a student who is not tardy, participates in class, does the homework, and studies for the test.  You were hired to affect lives.  Touch the life of a student, and you will have a student who will learn the subject you teach of physics, Japanese, or math on a higher level than before.
