How to be a good volleyball coach
For any team to play to their maximum in any given sport, the presence of a coach is imperative. Coaches are not only essential in team sports; they also contribute a great deal in enhancing the performance of players in individual sports such as boxing
or swimming. However, the importance of coaches increases in a team sport such as volleyball as they not only have to make the players perform to their maximum potential but also create and maintain harmony and collaboration amongst their players.
Coach Mike Krzyzewski expressed his views on what he thinks coaching is all about in the following words, "The truth is that many people set rules to keep from making decisions. Not me. I don’t want to be a manager or a dictator. I want to be a leader—and
leadership is ongoing, adjustable, flexible, and dynamic. As such, leaders have to maintain a certain amount of discretion."
In order to become a good volleyball coach and facilitate the players, one must adopt certain behaviour and practices that would help in maximizing player potential.
During practices, it is important that the players are assured of the fact that mistakes will not be looked upon with a frown as they are a way to improve oneself. As long as the coach gives this confidence to the players that making mistakes will not get
them in the wrong books, the volleyball players would be able to try new things and experiment more. Therefore, an atmosphere of creativity and learning will be created. However, good volleyball coaches should make a clear distinction between mistakes and
poor performance, which should not be tolerated.
As with any other learning device, it is often better if what has been learned is taught in order to increase one’s own understanding. Therefore, once volleyball coaches teach their players a new skill or technique, they should allow the players who have
been able to learn faster to teach it to their fellow players. Otherwise as well, if any player is having difficulty with any aspect of the game, a coach should first ask a player who is good in that area to teach it to his fellow player. In this way, a coach
will be able to achieve a better understanding among the players about volleyball and also create a good team atmosphere.
Volleyball coaches should try to keep the frequency of negative reinforcement to a minimum. When a coach thinks that it has become absolutely necessary to penalize one of the players, the best measure to take would be to make the player sit out and not allow
him or her to play volleyball. The coach can either assign a specific time period till which the player will not be allowed to play or on the other hand, a coach can also make a player sit out till the time some other player replaces him or her.
A good volleyball coach should try to inculcate perfection in his players. The aim of every practice session should be to raise the standard of the players. The coach should work towards making the players perform better from their present level in every
practice. This can only be done by frequent repetition.
If any volleyball coach tries to inculcate the above mentioned techniques in the practice sessions, the performance of the team is bound to improve significantly.
