How to be a leader ?

this is my first time to lead a group ( no lesser than 6 members ) .I dont know any of them so far .we are required to do a comptiotion duiring an exhibition >> any advices >??

Yes, the first thing is listen to them. make them talk if you have to but get a consensus. Then go ahead with the GROUP thing. ask for volunteers to do certain parts. you are like a hub of a wheel they are the spokes. every problem comes to you for you to help each part to do it right. ALWAYS be a good listener not a teller or be bossy. keep things moving and light do not make problems but talk with them to solicit answers that will solve hang ups that will happen. Carry the load if necessary with them. It will work out if you do these things. Keep in mind your deadline tho.

Define your objective in the very most simple terms and provide frequent feedback. (If a sentence or word can be misinterpeted, it will.)Communication is where the trouble is usually found. "Keep it simple stupid" should guide your language.

Leading a group is very different than with an individual. With the group, you must find the lowest common denominator. If you cannot do that you must learn or not attempt to be a leader. Style is extremely varied. Both the Horse Whisperer and the Gunny Sarg. in "Full Metal Jacket" knew how to do their jobs. But some horses will balk and hurt you and, in FM Jacket, "Gomer" did not fall into the general range of recruits. There are occasionally those who cannot be "trained."



Working with a group is somewhat like being an animal trainer. You must be able to communicate verbally and nonverbally so as to gain the necessary degree of trust and get their attention. First, you must get their attention!

Old maxims apply, like you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make it drink. as well as the ancient example of the a carrot and stick to get a stubborn mule to pull the wagon. all can learn if you provide the right incentive. some learn better than others.

The function of the executive is another matter. But i don't think your question is referring to prime ministers, kings, presidents, five-star generals and admirals, ceos, down to executive vice vice presidents or even regional managers. that area is grey around the edges and leaves room for much discussion.
