  1. The Union comment is correct- also try Millwrights they do precision welding which may interests you more.

  2. Get in contact with your local iron workers union or your pipefitters union they offer appreticeships in welding and you will get paid as an employee while you learn the better you get the more you get paid

  3. Join a union apprenticeship program. Many unions do welding as part of their trade. Ask at your skill training and guidance center for advice, but the answers will be limited. Apply to the union apprenticeship council of your choice.  Typical it is a 4-5 year training program that will let you earn while you learn your trade.

  4. Also check with the Boilermakers they do an awful lot of welding.

  6. Go through a welding school. The major companies that make welding machines, also have schools. Do a search for Hobart, Lincoln and Miller or just type in welding Schools.  I know there was one in Troy Ohio that was very good. A lot depends on what you want to weld. Going through a trade school is good but only concentrates on what they normally weld.

  7. Practice.

  8.    The best way is to go to school. I attended a two year program at a technical college. While there I learned how to weld as well as read blue prints, and fabricating parts using machines such as lathes, drill presses etc.

I then went on the job in a welding shop in the oil fields to get valuable experience. After learning that I had lung disease from breathing the fumes, I got into another field.

    Just something to think about!
