How does one become a republican or democratic delegate?

  1. At the time of your party primary or caucus in the earlier months of the election year, attend your party's precinct convention or caucus.  You will qualify by being a member of the party or voting in the primary.

    The precinct convention chooses delegates to the county convention, which chooses delegates to the state convention, which chooses delegates to the national convention.

    Additionally, the Democratic Party has superdelegates who are chosen to participate by having been elected officials or through other special qualifications.

    Basically, the people you see at the national conventions started by being elected by their neighbors.
