Question:

How to be calm? I am terrified of flying!

I am flying to California tomorrow from the East Coast (I have one stop as well). I usually take Xanax to fly because I have the worst panic attacks. However, I am 21 weeks pregnant and that is out of the question.

Once I am in the air it is fine. I am most scared during take-off and for about 20 minutes afterwards until the plane is starting to level off getting to cruising altitude. I do not like the sounds, the sensations - I feel like the plane will just fall from the sky (even though I do understand the physics behind it). It's really irrational.

Anyone have any tips on how to calm myself for the flight?

  1. Just remember that the guys who are flying the planes also have a strong interest in arriving safely and they are well trained to do so.  You are actually much safer in the air over the US, statistically, than you are in the car on the way to the airport.  Remember too that thousands of people travel millions of miles every year without any problems.  Relax, it will be fine.

  2. Take some books or magazines to read and just KNOW that you'll be fine! You already know that you're over reacting, so just keep that in your mind .... think to yourself " I know nothing is happening that isn't normal, and I shouldn't freak out unless ebery one else does!" :) Keep your mind on somethin else! Take an ipod or something to listen to once you get high enough, that'll help with the sounds!
