  1. The previous poster means well, but isn't correct.  I don't know the exact percentage, but many if not most commercial pilots aren't ex military pilots and the VAST majority have no degree in engineering.

To answer your first question, you have to ask yourself something.  A passenger jet can mean a small 48 seat regional jet or a huge 747 or anything in between.  If you want to fly for a major airline, you need a 4 year college degree and no it doesn't matter what it is in.  It could be art for all they care.  If you prove yourself in the interview, sims etc what do they care?  My suggestion on that is get a 4 year degree in something you enjoy that isn't related to flying.  If you get laid off (just look at the Delta / Northwest merge, you think they aren't going to let some pilots go?) you'll have a degree to fall back on.

Now past that you have some options.  Fly for the military and do your training there.  You'll most likely do ROTC in college and bid for a pilot slot.  You might get it and you might not.  The next option is major in aviation and get a degree in flying, which as part of your classes will get you all the needed certificates and ratings.  Like I said though, if your degree is in flying and you get laid off, how are you going to pay the bills?  The other option, which I would suggest is go to college, get a degree in something you enjoy and while in school go to the local airport and learn to fly there.  if you get laid off, no big deal.  Work an office gig until you can find another airline, you've got a safety net.   Nobody cares what you trained in, what you studied as long as you have the card that proves you are a real commercial pilot, have the experience they want and can prove it in the sims.

Are the classes hard, that depends on what your strengths are.  There are some science, some mechanical and some hands on type things to be mastered.  You have to be able to read instruments, approach plates etc.  Some people will tell you that you have to be a math or science wiz to do it, but that isn't the case.  You'll quickly find out that you have to be a jack of all trades.  Interpreting weather one minute, maybe doing some light math the next, reading a chart after that.

Dyslexia might slow you down.  I don't know your situation or severity, but I'm sure you know it is something you'll always live with.  Yes it might slow the learning process down, but it isn't a barrier.  I know great pilots with BAD ADHD, but they've learned to overcome.  You could very well be the same way.

My tips are, get out to your local small airport and learn everything you can.  Hang out there, ask questions and learn!  If you show your face around long enough and are cool with the people who work there, you'll be stunned at what they'll teach you.  Pilots are a great group eager to share what they know.  The next tip is get that degree in something else that you love.  Lastly, however you decide to learn to fly to reach your goal, always, always keep trying to learn more.  Read up, study up and keep learning.

    Best of luck to you.

  2. The best way is to study engineering, join the military and get them to train you. Frankly 99% of commercial pilots are trained by the military. The training requirements for commercial pilots are cost prohibitive for most folks.
