  1. For starters, you dont have to be tall to be a great volleyball player.  Heigth is just an advantage but don't think of being short as a disadvantage.  One of the things you can do when the ball comes to you is bend your knees and if it looks like it is going to go behind you, use your best judgement and move back to get it.  If it is really high up in the air, a set is a good idea, but if it is lower, use a bump. Use your best sense of direction and keep your eye on the ball.  Also, it is very helpful to "call" the ball.  If you are going to hit it, then yell i've got it, or mine or something to avoid numerous players on your team going to get it.  Good luck! its a great sport!

  2. practice, practice, practice.  go to a gym or an indoor volleyball place.  Since you're short, you should try to spin the ball over the net when you spike.

  3. first of all, dont worry about your height

one of the alll time best volleyball players was only 5'4, but with a vertical of 36". So height doesn't matter, as long as you are willing to work hard to improve.

You could always play defensive specialist or libero (back row players), where a lack of height is an advantage.

The most important thing in volleyball is perseverence and heart. Skills can improve with coaching, time, and effort, but  passion, team spirit, and espicially 'coachability' ( responding to what the coach says immediately, showing your potential for growth) is what  really makes you stand out in a tryout situation.

Best of luck in tryouts next year and remeber to work hard!

  4. You can't be afraid of the ball.  You have to go for it.  If you are serving, make sure that you get a good toss (if you are overhand serving).  If the toss goes behind you let it go!  Another thing, always be on your toes and ready to move!  Take action and go for the ball, never give up!
