How to be more social?

Question

I got lots of places horseback riding parties college food places etc but I end up kinda just standing there with nothing to say even with people I have stuff in common with most people can be funny around them or atleast find something that interests the parties to talk about instead of just silence any idea of how to be more outgoing at things like this?

Many people are really glad to talk about themselves so asking them questions ...."who is your favorite movie star, television program, etc", is a good place to start.  This questioning gives the impression that the person is important to you and will usually open the floodgates.  You may get too much information but at least the practice will help you feel better about your social skills.  One of my favorites in most situations is..."have you heard any good jokes lately"?  Maybe you could have a few of your own to follow up with.  Nothing is more enjoyable than being with happy people.

Humans as social beings have since the beginning of time had social groups and secret social groups. It is hard to feel socially relaxed when all around you exists members of a secret group. The pressures can become extreme and totally confusing. The big problem is only a few social groups will teach that a secret society can even exist in the polite society.

humans as social creatures are wonderful, i'd had trouble "socializing" when i was younger. i was told by an elder, my friends granfather, that we were made with two ears and only one mouth, so we should listen more than we talk.

following this after a while, maybe a few years, i was the one that listened and everyone acutually came to me to vent or share thoughts. learning about people helped me learn about myself. you can learn alot by just listening, then you will have alot to share with others when in a social setting.
