You've got to be joking.  Not even the mangaka is smarter then L, he just knows how to fake it.  And it's not that he's a super-genius at all, he just puts the logic centers of his brain in a hyperactive state. Because of this, it leads to various "quirks" (the sweets, always keeping his feet on the seat, lack of regard for personal appearance, etc).  It's something he was born with, and while it was cared for and made better by Watari, he was born with the gift.

lol youre joking right? noones smater than L. his brainpower for deductive reasoning is like a super-genius. and hes always focusing on that. becuase of that he has various downsides: eating alot of sweets, sitting with his feet on the chair, and lack of concern for apperance. but hes still amazing!
