Actually Michael, that is only the southern USA cracker military way of being "polite". In most countries addressing people as "sir" or "ma'am" and saying things like "yes sir" and "yes ma'am" is considered very rude. It makes them think you forgot their name. Most truely democratic countries that actually practice what they preach in their constitution do not believe in such a class structure. People actually get very offended when those who work for them lower themselves to the level of trying to kiss their *** and call them sir/ma'am like they are some kind of God Almighty. The global, proper way to address people is by their first name or Mr./Mrs. <lastname>.
