3.) Get nominated as your party's (if you're not an independent) nominee

4.) Win the election

5.) Shout "Woohoo! I'm a senator!" (optional)

US Senators usually have a background of office-holding in their own state, perhaps as mayor, city councilman or Senator in their state government.  

Any form of public recognition may serve to launch a political career from the senate, though.  A few actors have launched successful US Senate and House of Representative candidacies.

The candidate must be capable of making speeches and fund raising to finance their campaign.
