How to become a PE teacher?

I would like to know how do you go about becoming a PE(physical education) teacher? I want to work with kids in the school and I am interested in becoming either a teacher teaching a specific subject, or becoming a PE teacher helping kids get into shape and being healthy and getting them involved in fun activities. How can I go about doing this for the PE teacher career and what kind of degree can I pursue that will enable me to do this? I want to work with kids and help them grow to be intelligent citizens of the community and know in my heart that I helped them achieve that status. I hope any teachers or anyone working within the school system can help me with this. Thank you and have a great weekend!

  1. go to college--get a bachelors degree in physical education

  2. I agree with the earlier answerer.  Most public universities will offer a licensure/degree program in K-12 physical education.  It may be a little more difficult to find this program than say one in math or English teacher preparation.  Some programs are offered  by the same department that offers pre-physical therapy, etc.  Call the main "College of Education" for your particular university and ask directly if the website is confusing.

In the meantime, I would suggest coaching a little league team, Special Olympics or work part-time at the YMCA or Boys and Girls Club.  You might also be able to work as a substitute teacher while in college.  This will give you some exposure to the school system and various teaching assignments.

    Best wishes!
