How to become a US ambassador?

I want to become an ambassador when I grow up (I am a high school senior) but I dont know what to major in when im in college and how to apply for becoming an ambassador

  1. There are 2 ways to become an ambassador:

    1) Work up the foreign service career ladder.  Take the foreign service exam and undergo the training.  Once you have passed, you will typically be rotated in various countries every few years and in time you can be promoted into an ambassadorial position.

    2) Since Ambassadors are appointed by the President, it is no surprise that the more plum positions such as the Ambassadors to France is most often given as a political favors to those who have supported the President in various campaigns.

  5. It doesn't actually matter what you study - study the subjects that interest you most.  Everything is useful in the foreign service.  Languages, political skills, economics...all these are taught at the Foreign Service Institute as needed by employees.
