I've been a setter for two years now and I thought I was pretty good. my coach always told me to make my sets really high But then I went to a university game and all the sets were really low. So confusing!!!

  1. its very simple right now while you r in high school the setts cant b very complicated because people need time to set up their approach and everything college players need 2 keep the game at a fast paste because that is thier only chance of scoring and finding all the holes very quickly idk if u have ever seen when a college volleyball player gets a high set and has a chance to get everything set but i have, and they absolutely kill the ball so what it comes down to is just that colege has to keep at a fast paste because it is sooo mush harder to find the holes in a college game plus idk the way u set but try setting with only the first 3 fingers of each hand and when u r trying to sett up high somepeople may think its wierd but trust me noboy will think it wierd whenever u r the starting varsity setter that everyone admires

p.s if you have anymore ? about anything having to do with volley ball then email me @ otis_thepug2006@yahoo.com

  2. It depends on the situation.....if you're setting outside hitter usually the sets need to be high (not too high). If you're setting middle (and usually if you're middle is quick) you set low....called quick sets. Practice, practice, practice, and in no time you'll be great!

  3. practice

  4. I agree with Tasha.  The higher the level of play, the lower the set.  At the better colleges, you will very rarely see a set that is higher than the antenna on a good pass to the setter unless they are running something out of the back row.  If it is a bad pass, the colleges will use very high sets to help them get back into the play.  The blockers are bigger and faster in colleges.  That is why they want to keep the sets lower to try to get only one blocker.  (If you watch international play, the high sets get triple blocks on every play.)

  5. It really depends on the level you are playing. In most lower division high schools the sets are higher but the higher division you get the sets will be lower. I don't know of very many colleges who don't run a quick offensive system. I would work on both because since your coach wants you to set high then you need to work on that but also work on lower sets too. Talk to some of your teammates and see if any of them want to work on lower sets with you during practice.

I am always very positive with my girls about trying new sets, whether they are hitters or setters. When I was in high school we made up our own setting/hitting plays for the games instead of your basic outside, middle, and back sets. It really helps to move the ball around the net with different speeds and heights because it throws the other team off because they don't know what you will do next. Good lucK!!
