I want to become a dance teacher when I grow up. I'm only 14, but what should I be doing now so I can acheive my goal? Do I have to go to college to become a dance teacher? and if so how long? And any other things that you can think of that I would need to do as a kid.

  1. You have plenty of time to worry about college...

    I'm 15 and I student teach ALOT!

The cool thing about it is every once in a while you may get to fill in and be the main teacher for a day.

It's so much fun and you get to learn all the basics of teaching the younger kids.

  3. Hi there,

Most schools accept only teachers that are former professionals, professionals, or have a degree in dancing, choreography, or the arts.  If you aren't going to be a professional dancer, you most likely won't get a job as a teacher without a college degree.

So yes, you need to have at least two years (preferably four) of college for dance.  You will need lots of ballet experience, plus experience in the style you want to teach.  But no studio wants to hire someone without ballet experience.  It's the foundation of everything.

That's what you need to do as an adult when you get older.  As a kid, there are a couple things you can do to get experience.

Firstly, you can sit in on a class for younger ones (that is how you start, after all) and notice how the teacher teaches.  See how she incorporates terminology and fundamental principles while still making it fun.  That also ties into having experience with kids.

Babysit!  If you have kids in your neighborhood to look after, that's great.  Also, younger siblings are great to gain experience with.  You always want to be connectible and approachable in the classroom to your students, so experience with kids is a definite must.

You're fourteen, which is a great age to start assistant teaching.  There are a couple ways you can get started doing that.  First, if you display a lot of talent and potential in your classes, your studio might ask you to substitute or assistant teach for younger kids.  Another option is to ask either your studio or a different one.  The plus side to your studio is that they know how you dance and they know you, and you are trustworthy with the kids.  The upside to another local dance studio is that you can gain experience teaching in different environments and styles, and make a desirable impression that perhaps you don't have with your current studio.

A good place to start assistant teaching is at your local athletic club or gym; something like the YMCA.  They have very laid-back dance programs and if you're a good dancer and have experience with kids, you're more than qualified to assist.  Write to them (using "snail" mail, not email!!!) saying you're interested in assistant teaching for the dance program.  You might want to offer to assist without pay just to get experience with teaching.  Send your resume with your letter.

Good luck and hope that helped!  Remember, always feel free to contact me with further questions.♥
