how do you become any type of gym leader in pokemon pearl? if you cant do it in pearl then what can you do it in?

When playing Silver/Gold/Crystal, when you return to Kanto however, the character you played in Red/Blue (default name was Red) has become leader of Viridian City gym, replacing Giovanni

Is this your first time playing? You cannot and never be a gym leader in any of the pokemon games. You must be a trainer.

You never can, in any pokemon game. The closest you can get is become the pokemon league champion, but you still face the champion every time you go through.
