Be an excellent player. That means having a plus handicap. You shoot par or better  50 % of the time. Then in Nov, Dec you plank down$ 2,500 and go to qualifying school. If you make the first cut, you play 5 rounds where 15 low players are eligible for the PGA tour and another number( not sure how many) qualify for the Nationwide Tour. Some players who lose their cards by not earning enough money sometimes get sponsor's exemptions the following year. If memory serves me correctly, Woody Austin received a sponsor's exemption, won a tournament and has an automatic exemption for a number of years.
