How to become a reading specialist?

I am working on becoming a school counselor. Will my certification be enough to become a reading specialist. I know you need "teaching experience" Will counseling count? Thanks a bunch.

  1. You don't say where you are... but in California you normally need a "Reading Cerificate". It's 5 graduate classes about reading.

    It depends on your admin. too, they can do a lot of things if they want to. You may make your desire for reading known and see what happens.


  2. No, counseling won't count.  To become highly qualified to teach reading, you will need an MA in Reading and classroom experience.  To become a Reading Specialist, you will have to pursue an Ed. Specialist in Reading Degree.
