How to become a teacher - why is the answer so hard to find??

I have my BA in English (Writing and Literature). I'm interested in becoming a high school teacher in either English or Writing (I live in Massachusetts, USA, and would be willing to work in charter schools as well) but I can't find any step by step instructions on how to do it. Where do I go? What do I do? I've been told 100 different things by different people and I find that educator websites, at least MA ones, aren't very helpful for someone who doesn't really understand what all of it means. I've even tried simple google/yahoo searches and I can't find anything. Some people say I have to go through 1-2 more years of schooling to get my Master's and that's it, some say I need to get my Master's AND take tests- though I'm not sure which ones. Other people say all I need to do is take 1 test and I don't need to get more schooling... can someone give me some clear info?

  1. Typically, you need to have a teaching certificate which will mean more schooling. You will also need to take the certification tests (usually the PRAXIS exams).

The best way to get clear information is by contacting the Department of Education in your state. They will be able to analyze your degree and determine what you are qualified to teach.

  2. try this website...mass board of education

    http://www.doe.mass.edu/educators/

  3. I think in any country (well most) even if you have a degree you then need to go onto having a post graduate which is like an additional add on or another dregree/diploma in teaching! Doesnt matter how smart you are if you cant relate this to children well and cant communicate well then you will never be a teacher. Try to contact some universities and ask them about this as i am sure they woudl get this alot

  4. Contact the Department of Education in the county in which you want to teach.  They can give you very specific and accurate info.  Every county, state, etc. is different, and that's why you're getting such varying answers.

  5. Well your first step is complete... you have your BA.  No, you do not need a Master/MA to be a teacher.  Yes, you do need to take a series of exams... that all depends on which ones your state requires.  If you want to be a full time teacher (you don't need it to be a sub) you are going to need your Clear Credentials, and that requires an EXAM as well.

If I were you I would apply for a substitute position and go on from there.  Why don't you go and speak to someone that does the hiring in the district you are interested in?  Also, it usually states what the requirements are on a job application.  You can also go to your local HS and ask to speak to a college advisor.

    Lots of luck!

  6. It also depends on where you want to teach. If you want to teach in a public school you need a certificate if you want to teach in a private school a Master's Degree is probably sufficient.

  7. You should contact the education department in your state.  They will let you know what you will need to do to become a teacher with your current credentials.

    Good luck on your journey.
