  1. Talk to your local recruiter.

  2. Get good grades in high school stay out of trouble and talk to a recruiter. Plan on at least 8 years in the military.

  3. Three major steps:

1-  Must have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution

2- Must be accepted into and complete a commissioning program-only officers are fighter pilots

3- Must be accepted into and excel at Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training

You can combine 1 & 2 together either via the Academy or ROTC.  A third way is via Officer's Training School.  One applies within one year of college graduation.

SUPT runs for about 15 months (though this changes frequently as the program is always being adjusted).  Once accepted for SUPT, and you sign up to go you incur a commitment of ten years AFTER SUPT.  This is regardless of weapon system.

Speaking of which, fighters are usually an item of intense competition-and not many become available per class.  In a class of 30, MAYBE 2-3 fighters might come down.  Sometimes less, like none, RARELY 1 or 2 more.  "Needs of the Air Force" determine this.  In order to make sure you get what you want, you'll need to absolutely EXCEL at SUPT.  This means getting as many perfect scores in academics and flying as you possibly can.  You scores will determine your class ranking-highest ranking students get first crack at what's available.

    Best ways to prep:

1- Work hard in HS school and get some great grades.  It wouldn't hurt to lean towards Math, physics and chemistry.  If you're shooting for the academy this will help you.  A foreign language is not bad either.

2- Get involved in some extracurricular activities.  JROTC regardless of service, and Civil Air Patrol are very positive on your application package for Academy, ROTC or OTS.  CAP is a great way to get some free flying as well.

3- Get in shape or stay that way if you are.  Flying is mentally and physically demanding.

4- Stay out of trouble.  Don't let drug users or felons fly $120M aircraft.

5- Consider some flying lessons.  Expensive, yes but a huge positive for you in your SUPT package.  Other options:  glider license, student license even copies of your logbook.

6- Get out to some Air Force open houses and talk to the crews.  Tell them what you want to do.  You'll get the very latest information that way.

    Hope that helps.
