  2. As an RN, I checked out the website of the first poster and it is actually very informative. There is a LOT of information there that you will find useful.  As for your parents, I think you should just tell them that you want to volunteer. If they get excited it's only because they love you and are proud of you. I'm a parent myself, so I know where they are coming from, but it's only been 10 years since I was a teenager and I remember how embarrassing that can be.  They really don't mean to be goofy, they just can't help it. lol What always worked for me was to get all the information ahead of time:

    1. Who is your contact person at the hospital?

    2. When is the training sessions for volunteers and how long is that training?

    3. What days and hours are available for you to volunteer?

    4. How will volunteering help you in your future aspirations as an RN?

I know from personal experience that if you can have this information before you have the conversation, you will show them that you have really given this a lot of thought and are serious about the volunteering experience. If you are able to answer their questions in that initial conversation, they may just relax a little. Good luck in your conversation and your future nursing career!
