Question:

How to become fluent in Spanish on my own time?

I love Spanish and can read, write, and speak a little bit, but I want to become fluent. I live in an area where immersing myself in the Spanish language is impossible. So what I want to know is, what if I read books and the Bible in Spanish and practice this on a daily basis, will I become fluent just by reading Spanish material? Tips are very welcome!

  1. Reading the Bible in Spanish isn't going to help you a whole lot, unless you want to be able to quote the Bible.  Mostly it's probably going to be in archaic language, and you'll find lots of words that won't be used in ordinary speech.

If you want to become fluent, you must speak.  The more you speak and listen to natives, the more fluent you'll become.

Really, the best way is immersion.

Yeah, practice, full time, on a daily basis, is best.

  2. I would say you would become very good at it but i don't think you would be as fluent as a native of the language. I was going to try to learn more on my own one time but i was too over whelmed. I took 2 years in HS but waited a whole year again to start back up and I could remember a few things but not much. If i were you i would go to barnes and noble or online at amazon or ebay and look for instructional CD like ones that come with a book and audio so you can actually hear what the native speaker sounds like. I would think that is the closest you will get to talking to someone in spanish since you said you don't live around the language.

Anyway Good luck and i hope this helped!!

  3. I´m a Spanish language teacher and I can tell you that anything helps. However, try to read newspapers, books, and blogs (everyday Spanish usually).

To become fluent try to express objectives. For instance, try to talk about your CV and work experience. You know that for that you will need past tenses verbs, time references, the numbers, etc. Have them ready. And start talking. To yourself. Maker sure that what you are talking is properly written. There´s no use if you have mistakes. ANd so on.

So, make sure you have and objective, prepare it, and say it. Then you can go on talking more complex texts but always keeping in mind you are becoming fluent. Start modestly. Fluency, when you don´t have anybody to talk to, is hard, but not impossible.

Make friend and talk to them in MSN, Skype etc! Now is so easy to find Spanish speaking friends around the world!

  4. I don't recommend  just studying written Spanish.  If you can't immerse yourself in the language, watch Telemundo or look up Youtube videos in Spanish.
