You are called to a residence where an unresponsive 7 year old has possibly ingested drain cleaner by accident. He is breathing shallowly at a rate of 8 breaths/minute. He has no gag reflex. How would you best manage this situation?

I am GUESSING....insert a nasogastric tube into the stomach and suction contents, while a partner gets a Bag Valve Mask and performs rescue breathing at a rate of 1 breath every 3 seconds. All of this occuring while we are packaging the patient for rapid transport to hospital.

Am I missing something?

  1. Pick up the bottle and call posion control BEFORE suctioning.  Tell then what he ingested and they will tell you what to do.  The substance my be too caustic and eat away the plastic subsequently buring the child's esphogus.
