  2. DONT unless you have a couple of weeks before you travel.

You would be better off going to your nearest station that has booking facilities and spending some time with the assistant there. The cost is the same minus the fees for sending the tickets, you have them in your hand and the assistant will be able to advise you on anything you will need to know, book seats automatically, check for quicker trains, cheaper ones too.

I worked inside a ticket office for a year and a half at the local station and was very surprised by the amount of people that booked online then came to us when their tickets do not arrive thinking that we can help!

As we explain, information is always easier when someone is trained to do the work for you. All we need is the day you want to travel, the day travelling back and a rough idea of when you either want to start or get to your destination and preferably a route.

It may take a couple of mins for a simple precise enquiry, the longest was 20mins but there again that was because the customer was looking for the cheapest possible deal over a couple of days and each train had to be checked.

  3. Find out which company operates the service you want to use and go to there website.

You could also try The Train Line at

  4. Virgin Trains and GNER offer good deals if you book your tickets in advance online.  Also, it sometimes works out cheaper if you buy 2 single tickets instead of a return ticket.
