Question:

How to braid?

Well im going to a horse show on sunday and I am doing a 2ft hunter class. I have braided before but they looked horrible, they were loose and all crowded, and i used elastics. This time i was hoping to use yarn, because it looks neater. My horse has a pretty long and thick mane, so its very hard to braid. Any step-by-step instructions for braiding with yarn, or getting neater braids with elastics?

Heres a picture of her: http://s204.photobucket.com/albums/bb142/kaylie107/?action=view&current=100_3275-1.jpg&t=1216326310833

How many braids do you think should go on her mane? Is her mane too long for the braids to work out? should i cut it?

Please help! =D

  1. Shes very cute lol and you might wanna pull her mane a little i wanted to suggest that you pull her mane some or it will take for ever it should be between 4"-6" and i will also suggest you braid with yarn because they look the best. For best results make them really tight! good luck =]

  2. It does not need braiding.. Its just a 2ft hunter class. Not olympia!

  3. i would braid with yarn! and your horse is ADORABLE!!!!!! i would also suggest pulling it becuase it will be alot easier to braid!

  4. Here is a great site that has directions and materials needed!

    http://www.texashorsemansdirectory.com/t...

To get the yarn the length it says, loop it around your arm a bunch of times, and cut it in half on one end.

But you will definitely need to pull your horse's mane. Also, brush it every day after pulling it and it should be thinner.

    Good Luck!

  6. i know the feeling! here's what i do to achieve the braids that look best.

if your horse has a thick mane i suggest thinning it just enough that it's even in thickness the whole way down her neck. you'll want to cut it so it's about 5 inches in length.

start at the top of her neck, sepereate about 2 inches of her hair from the rest. braid it and put a band on the bottom.

do this the whole way down her neck, leaving only the area where your saddle will be unbraided.

then starting at the top with the first braid,  fold it up into a neat little button, and tie it with yarn or use a band. dont worry about the little shaggy piece you'll see, you can always cut that off. remember, hair grows back so dont worry about messing up. i dont have the step by step instructions to yarn with me right now, but just go to google and search for horse braiding how to's. i'm sure there's something out there!

    hope this helps a bit!

  7. use twist ties.  thats what i do with my horses.  and on haow many i jsut grab about a quarter sixe of mane and braid it then grab the next one and so on till i get to the end.

  8. You should really pull her mane it is way too long and the braids will be too bulky.  But, she has a nice type of mane to work with.  You can use a scissor to cut to a certain point then pull for a more natural look when not braided.

Do a search on YouTube..someone recently asked this same question and was directed to a few videos that gave easy step by step instructions.  You could also do a search here and see if you can find the link.

Also, trim her up a bit..her fetlocks, a bridle path, and of course muzzle and ears. Even the bottom of her tail cut straight across about halfway below the hocks.   Hunters have a very refined look it is different than "jumper" classes.  I would say looking at her conformation, I would go for more braids which will make her neck look longer and sleeker.

    Have a great show!!

  9. HI I'M NOT TO GOOD WITH THE BRAIDS MYSELF LOL!

BUT IF YOUR AT LIVERY YOU CAN PAY LIKE £1 OR SOMETHING FOR SOMEONE TO BRAID YOU HORSES HAIR.

I WOULD PULL THE MANE FIRST!

AS HER MANE IS LONGER JUST FLIP THE PLAITS ROUND QUITE A FEW TIMES
