Question:

How to break into the HR industry?

Currently I am in school to obtain my HR Generalist Certificate. I have 8 years experience as retail store manager where I responsible for all hiring needs by recruiting, interviewing, and training. I also did performance appraisals, progressive counseling, and terminations. I also worked for 5 years as an office manager where I also did the above duties. I currently work for a large retailer where I process their payroll. I applied for a position as an HR Assistant there and after having 2 interviews and being told by my boss that it was a done deal and the job was mine, I was told I did not get it. What does it take to break into this industry? I thought I had enough experience for an entry level position such as an assistant. Can anyone assist me with what I should do. I'm staying in my current position only for the tuition reimbursement but I have thought of looking but I'm a little discouraged. And advice?

  1. You should be able to get an HR job, but you will have to look outside your curent co.

I would also suggest you start classes to get a bachelor's degree

  2. I'd talk to the boss man/lady & find out what happened?  It seems you went through a lot of trouble for nothing.  They should at least inform you why someone else was chosen.

Do you know for sure that someone else was chosen??  Alternatively, retail is going through some hard times, unless you're in the liquor business.  So I'm wondering if they maybe they're retrenching?

I'd keep my eyes & ears open for something better to come along.
