Question:

How to break up hardpan?

i an digging post holes for a fence. i am going down about 2ft with each hole, but once i got to about 1 1/2 ft down the hardpan was so hard that water wouldnt even soke through it. i jus need a way to break it up. i have a break bar but it jus skips off the surface of the hard pan so any suggestions will help....thnk

  1. that is probably a good base for a post if you cant bust it up with your bar


  2. Go to your local hardware store and buy an extension for your drill and drill several holes with the largest bit you have. If this doesn't help by itself then try the water trick; the water will soak through the holes you drilled. Hope this helps.

  3. Is it hard pan, or is it rock! May need to rent a jackhammer or an auger to be able to break through it.

  4. You may have to end up renting something like an auger - post hole digger, or a power hammer which is basically a jack hammer. Especially since you can not break through with your digging bar. The problem with the auger is that if you don't have enough weight on it then you are going to have the same problem with the digging bar, it will just sit in the hole and spin without doing any actually digging, so you might want to recruit some friends to help you if you go that rout.
