  1. if they have snippers put a rubberband around them

  2. First off you shouldn't take the first answer for truth, there are a lot of people around that answer these question that have absolutely no clue whatsoever.

Secondly you should really research these things prior to even thinking about getting a pet.

How long have they been together?  If they have bonded with each other, it can be horribly detrimental to seperate them and there is no guarentee that they will re-bond to you after the fact. They may stop eating for a while after being separated and being moved into a new cage as this is very stressful. (this is answer to b)

If you really need to get a hold of them, you can try using a towel to calm them while you remove them from the cage.  (this is answer to a)

How old are they?  You should have either bought hand raised birds or started working with them immediately after getting them in order to make them bond with you.  You can also think about clipping their wings while you are starting to handle them, although I am not fond of this and if you are going to do it, make sure an experienced handler does it.

They are not guarenteed to bond with you if you separate them and they have been together for a while.  They may be more affraid of you and resent you.  If they have been together for a long time, I would suggest doing your training sessions with both of them together.  (this is answer to c)

I would not be worried about target training at this point.  That is something you would be doing if they were already bonded with you, well trained and you've had them for a while and are an experienced handler.  There is not much of a point if you can't even get near them.  They are not going to fly to you on command if you can't even approach them (answer to d)

They should have at least one of each of the following class of toy in their cage and at least one of each set asside so you can rotate them so they do not get bored with them:

    - preening toy (toy with lots of knots in it to try to undo)

    - foraging toy (a treat that is in a container that takes a bit of work to get out) you can do this yourself by putting a treat in a ball of paper

    - an activity toy (toy with parts that move or slide, turn, etc.)

    - exercise toy (ladder or swing)

    - a reflective toy (bird safe mirror)

    - foot toys (bird safe toys of appropriate size that they can pick up and manipulate with their feet and beak to develop muscles)

    - comfort toy (like a soft hanging hideout)

    - destruction toy (a toy made to tear apart) like paper, softwood, etc

    - enemy toy (one that they can bang around that makes noise (like bells)

    - perches of different shapes, widths and textures.(answer to e)

I really want to stress though the bad outcome and horrible stress separating bonded birds will have.  Its really not worth it.

  4. You answered my question inappropriately I had to report your answer.

  5. Your important answer- The smaller cage the better! They will eventually want to come out of their cage because they will want to explore. If they are new, give them a few days to get used to the surroundings. You should keep the cage opened, to give them options. Budgies are selfish and territorial birds. they are not meant to be held , but you can tame them.

At first you should use a glove to get them out of the cage and place them in separate  boxes. Then take the gloves off. They will probably give you a lot of hard bites, but the more you act about that, the more they'll do it because they think they have advantage. they way to get them out if first, separate them in boxes or whatever they can stay in. You should buy two cages. One for one, and one for the other. This way they will get used to the owner and not the other bird.

Will they eat? They will eat if you give them foods that are meant for them. They will eat if they are alone, from another bird. They will eat after a few days, to get used to the surroundings.

They WILL recognize you as their new flock if you separate them.

Their purpose is to sing, whistle tunes and sometimes, depending on the bird, it can learn up to 4000 words!!!

If you are away, either put some music or television on to keep them entertained. When you get home BE SURE to get them out and give them a treat, they will start to recognize that you are the owner.

    Good luck
