  1. It depends on what you build it out of....

I recommend either plexiglass or real glass

Wood gets really nasty and harbors all kinds of bacteria

You could also use chicken wire and p.v.c. pipe........depending on what kind of reptile and how much humidity the enclosure needs to hold.

  2. like the others said, it depends on the reptile.  For small reps like geckos, you can just use a 10-gal fish tank.  For an iguana you want a large cage but it should be tall because they climb.  For bearded dragons, you're talking about 4 feet long, but you can get away with less than 2 feet high because they don't climb like some other reptiles might.  For my beardies I used wood for the four posts and the floor then attached plexi-glass for the sides, leaving the top open to avoid humidity in there.  Cages can be as simple or elegant as you want them to be, the challenge is in making them fit the needs of your pet (size, shape, lighting, humidity, etc.)

  3. Depending on what your housing.  Larger reptiles do better with plywood housing, screen tops and glass views on front.  I prefer using the glass because its cheaper and more resistant to the heat lamps.   All in all it would be really important to know how big you are wanting. The link below is what I followed to build a home for my tegu.  It goes step by step with pictures
